Butterfly House
SKU: windwalk300
Bring color to your backyard by providing a butterfly sanctuary and help these beautiful creatures by providing a shelter. Originally designed as a hibernation box for a few species of butterflies, gardeners have found that many species utilize this house for protection from the wind and weather. Butterflies may also use the house during mating seasons, and possibly, you may find chrysalises inside. Whether it is for backyard conservation practices or that special garden décor, or you want to instill in your children the wonders and appreciation of nature, you will immensely enjoy this product.
We developed our DOUBLE ROOF BUTTERFLY HOUSE with the intent to provide greater ventilation for the summer heat. A hinged door with a latch allows for easy observation, cleaning and placement of bark, leaf litter, twigs and sticks for a suitable pupation site.
Butterfly house dimensions are 24 inches high by 5 1/2 inches deep by 7 inches wide.
Made of finished pine, pre-drilled screw construction.
We recommend treating the outside with boiled linseed oil or water based nontoxic paint.
You can place the butterfly house on a post, attach to a tree, preferably in the shade of a deciduous tree, or bush in your butterfly habitat.
A butterfly house will only attract species native to your area. You can increase your chances of attracting the butterflies in your area if you follow some simple guidelines. A native or ornamental butterfly garden needs to attract local species by providing food for caterpillars as well as nectar for the adults. Select caterpillar host plants to attract your desired species, but do not forget that caterpillars only eat and grow. Clumps of wildflowers provide a good source of nectar. A source of water can be a birdbath or a large flowerpot saucer with stones and water. Butterflies do not like to have wet feet, they tiptoe on the stones while drinking. Wind Walkers Garden
